India’s EV Revolution: Decoupling from China with Rare Earth-Free Powertrains, ETAuto

This is more than substitution; it’s a fundamental redesign of EV powertrains.

For decades, electric vehicles have relied on rare earth magnets to deliver the torque and efficiency needed for high-performance motors. However, with over 90 per cent of the global rare earth processing and production controlled by China, and new export restrictions tightening the tap, India’s EV industry is facing a strategic wake-up call.

In May 2025, a leading Indian two-wheeler OEM warned that production disruptions could begin as early as July due to rare earth magnet shortages. This isn’t a hypothetical future crisis; it’s happening now, with real impact on delivery timelines and manufacturing schedules.

India sits on the world’s fifth-largest rare earth reserves, yet processes virtually none of them domestically. Until recently, the only viable path was importing finished magnets from China.

Drop-In Alternatives, Made for Bharat

Rather than chasing supply chain fixes, a team of Indian engineers is taking a radically different approach: building motors that eliminate rare earth dependency entirely. These alternatives rely on locally abundant materials—steel, copper, aluminium—and are engineered specifically for Indian two- and three-wheeler platforms.

This is more than substitution; it’s a fundamental redesign of EV powertrains. The motors are built from the ground up for Bharat’s mobility landscape: monsoon humidity, dusty roads, stop-and-go traffic, and mixed urban-rural usage patterns. Early pilots are already being tested on Indian roads, with commercial deployment targeted for the next 12-18 months.

The performance gap that once favoured rare earth magnets is closing fast. Advanced reluctance motors, optimised ferrite designs, intelligent control systems, and high-grade silicon steel can now match torque and efficiency benchmarks without the environmental damage or geopolitical risk. They’re also easier to maintain, ideal for India’s cost-sensitive, service-heavy mobility market.

Built to Scale Fast, Supported to Lead

What gives India a unique edge is its ability to scale quickly. These new motors are not retrofits–they’re designed for Indian roads, loads, and usage patterns. With deep local supply chains, low tooling costs, and a strong base of two- and three-wheeler OEMs, the country is positioned to industrialise rare-earth-free motors faster than other markets.
Government support is accelerating this shift. The Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for auto and component manufacturing is pushing investment into magnet-free technologies, while academic-industry R&D partnerships are moving innovation from lab to market faster than ever. By investing in rare-earth-free powertrains, India is building new value chains—spanning materials, tooling, manufacturing, and software. These developments support local job creation, domestic IP ownership, and long-term industrial resilience.

A Strategic Reset: From Dependence to Leadership

The transition to rare earth-free EVs is not just a technical workaround. It is a strategic reset. A chance for India to break out of fragile global supply chains and define its own technology roadmap, grounded in local strengths rather than global vulnerabilities.

By scaling rare-earth-free powertrains, India can remove a critical point of external dependency while strengthening its domestic EV ecosystem. This is the EV revolution India can own.
